Failed Gastric Bypass

If gastric bypass proves unsuccessful, gastric banding is one potential solution. Because gastric bypass surgery requires a fundamental reconfiguration of the digestive tract, the procedure itself should not be revised. However, if the stomach pouch has stretched to a size that makes weight loss difficult, a gastric band can be used to control the size of the pouch, reversing the effects of the failed bariatric surgery. Symptoms of failed gastric bypass include frequent vomiting, dumping syndrome, increased stomach capacity, and slowed weight loss or weight regain.

StomaphyX™ for Gastric Bypass Revision

The StomaphyX™ device is an exciting new solution to failed bariatric surgery. With StomaphyX™, gastric bypass revision patients from Los Angeles and Orange County can be treated without any incisions or lengthy recovery period. The StomaphyX™ procedure is extremely safe and effective, essentially painless, and can be adjusted as needed.

The actual StomaphyX™ treatment process involves inserting a cylindrical medical device down the esophagus along with a fiber optic camera that allows the surgeon to monitor the procedure. Using this StomaphyX™ device, the surgeon carefully places a number of polypropylene fasteners to change the shape and reduce the size of the stomach. This, in turn, helps the patient to lose weight more effectively and may keep it off in the long term. Once the device has been removed, the procedure is complete. Unless the patient has other medical problems requiring a hospital stay, StomaphyX™ is typically an outpatient procedure.

Failed Gastric Banding

One of the advantages of gastric banding is that the band can be adjusted without additional surgery to help control complications as well as the size of the stomach pouch. These adjustments are often enough to solve the problem but, in some cases, a revisional procedure for failed bariatric surgery may be required.

Symptoms of failed gastric banding that may require a new surgery include frequent vomiting after meals, low tolerance for solid foods, chronic reflux, ulcers, and chronic pain in the area just below the breastbone. Increased or increasing stomach pouch capacity in spite of repeated adjustments may also be a sign of a failed procedure. When the LAP-BAND® System or the REALIZE™ Band has failed, a switch from gastric banding to a gastric bypass may be beneficial.
